Chapter 9

Abbie came home to an empty house. The key by the front door was gone, and so was Joyce. Although Abbie had managed to get off work twenty minutes early, it was still dark by the time she reached home. She had assumed Joyce would be there. Her car was there, so she had not driven anywhere. Abbie hoped she was having a safe walk around town.

Meanwhile, she would plate the take-out she brought with her. Salads and French fries soon decorated the dining table. Naturally, that wasn’t all. Abbie had another trick up her sleeve to set the mood with her girlfriend.

The door opened ten minutes later. There was Joyce, removing her gloves, scarf, and sweater. She looked up to see Abbie in the dining room and offered a friendly smile. It took Abbie a few seconds to get over how enchanting those rosy cheeks and fluffy hair looked.

“You’re home!” Joyce locked the door behind her and said hello to Sammy as she ran up in greeting. “Sorry I was out so late. I went for a walk on the beach and then up and down the promenade. Looks like the perfect place for an early morning jog. Ever try it?”

Abbie shook her head. “You know I’ve told you I’m not one for running unless I’m late, but I see people out there all the time jogging back and forth like they have nowhere to go.”

“That’s because it’s all about clearing their minds and revitalizing their bodies,” Joyce said with a chuckle. “What do you have there?”

“Told you I was bringing home dinner. I thought salads were safe enough. Anything you don’t want, you can take out and throw in mine. Also have a nice array of salad dressings in the fridge. I get a little something of everything every time I go out or order in, so I have quite the collection. You seem like an Italian dressing sort of woman. Or, maybe, honey Dijon ranch?”

Much to Abbie’s relief, Joyce was still laughing. While Sammy danced around her, she approached the dining table and put her hands on the back of the chair, pushing out her chest and batting her eyelashes. “Believe it or not, I love salads, but don’t care much for dressing. I eat all my salads dry.”

“Are you kidding? Pretty sure that constitutes as sociopathic behavior.” Abbie lured her dog to come join her at the end of the table. That gave Joyce some room to sit down in peace. “Whatever you want, though, my darling.” She went back into the kitchen to get her own dressing. Abbie would be damned if she ate dry salad.

Joyce had an expectant look on her face when Abbie returned. As soon as they were both in their chairs, Joyce said, “Your darling, huh?” A fork tapped against her bowl. “I was wondering when you would get flirty.”

“Are you saying I wasn’t being flirty enough last night? Because I felt like I spent every moment between you getting here and going to bed trying to suggest that we get into each other’s pants.
